ConAmor

juanjo-conamor.jpg

My normal Friday morning ritual includes reading all of the new movie, restaurant, art exhibit, and shopping reviews, regardless of the fact that I almost never actually go the cinema, restaurants, museums or shopping. This morning after discovering that for the second day in a row I had absolutely no hot water (this on the last day of repairs that have left me without access to my kitchen for the past two weeks), I opened the El Mundo Metropoli Section weekend guide to find the face of my friend Juanjo and the review of his restaurant, ConAmor.

ConAmor is where I always take visitors to Madrid for excellent Spanish food. I always order the fried eggplant and the paella with vegetables.

Jacovo

My friend and former right hand man at FON, Jacobo (aka Hysidro), recently started a blog covering some of his design work. I used to just look over to my left to see what he was working (or procrastinating) on. Now that I don’t get to see him every day, I check out jacovo.com. I particularly like the beer in his face (and especially the sausages and garlic hanging in the background).

My One Track Mind

At this time every year I start getting excited about the day after Thanksgiving;  and not because of the Black Friday sales, but because the Christmas Season officially begins and I can finally start annoying everyone with my Christmas favorites.

Although I am normally excited at the end of November, this year coming home for Christmas is just about all I think of. It clouds my judgment. So forget about my criticizing U.S. foreign policy or getting on Obama’s case for being such a wimp on every single issue on his plate. I haven’t been home to Washington, DC in over a year and half, and in my mind I am already over the river and through the woods.

Angel at the Post

angel-post.jpg

It was very nice to open the Washington Post this morning and find my friend and former boss, Angel Cabrera, right there on the front page of the online version. Angel was writing about global leadership, though I would not necessarily agree with his listing of the present Goldman Sachs CEO as an exemplary top executive.

Ramadan Mubarak, Bessaha Wlhna

ram2009.jpg

The last two years I have spent the first days of Ramadan with my (now) Moroccan wife. Just as she has achieved an appreciation for Rudolph and Santa, I have learned to share in her excitement for Ramadan. Unfortunately this year we won’t be able to spend these first days together. Fret not, I still found my way to a few Moroccan run stores in Madrid and bought some of the typical goodies, including my favorite pastries.

The Most Beautiful Girl in the World

picasso-girl-dove.jpg

I often look at people of all ages and think about who they’ll become or who they were at previous times in their lives. And I think about the different stages and manifestations of beauty throughout the course of their lives. I wonder whether little kids will maintain, grow into or lose their beauty, and whether old age will reveal the beauty in their youth and vice versa. I wonder whether there is an eternal quality to beauty that continues to make us recognizable even when our earliest and most recent portraits bear almost no resemblance to each other.

Last night my wife (I am legally married, but that’s another story) showed me photos that I had never seen before of her as a child. I was left speechless. Of course, I see traces of her present posture, gestures, and features. But most of all, when I look at that little girl in the photographs, I can see clearly everything that is beautiful about the woman that is today my wife.

Seasons and Longing

bay-bridge.jpg

I only ever really feel homesick at the change of each season. And now that summer is very much upon us, especially in Madrid where it has been consistently over 90F (32C) for the second straight week, I very much miss home. I miss my brother’s rooftop in Brooklyn (though I have only been up there twice). I miss the drive from Washington to the Bronx through New Jersey. I miss the C&O Canal. I miss Georgetown. I miss the Washington humidity. I miss cooking out. I miss my mother’s garden. I miss the Bay Bridge. I miss the fruits and vegetables on the way to the Eastern Shore. I miss opening the window and being on the beach in Bethany. And I miss my family.

I suppose I am lucky living in Europe. I am in wonderful Madrid and spend at least a little time each month in Paris, probably the most beautiful city in the world. Nevertheless, whenever the seasons change — from hot to cold, cold to hot or in between — I always miss home.

Learned it from you

My college roommate, Dave, and I used to get the biggest laugh out of this anti-drug commercial from the early 90s. And we weren’t even high.

My Uncle on Meet the Press

app.jpg

I have a Sunday ritual and it has nothing to do with going to Church. Every Sunday evening (GMT+1), I watch the Meet the Press video podcast and the online streaming version of This Week with George Stephanopoulos. Last week was no exception, but when Meet the Press host, David Gregory, said the following:

I want to turn to this issue of political will more generally. Governor Schwarzenegger, this AIG mess is in part about American’s frustrations.  They don’t know who’s protecting them anymore.  They don’t know what to believe in anymore.  They feel like government’s letting them down, they feel like the financial system and industry is letting them down.  A lot of people upset with the media as well.  The Asbury Park Press in New Jersey, on the shore there, wrote this in an editorial this week:

“Here’s the one part of the bailout that makes our stomach churn”–this was an editorial–“churn the most:  None of these guys are in prison.  You can rob a bank out of desperation and end up with 10 or 15 years in jail.  You can rob a nation blind out of pure greed and get nothing but a tongue lashing. Something’s got to change.”

Now, nobody at AIG is accused of any wrongdoing or committing any crime, just bad judgment at the very least.  Where do Americans go for accountability for all this?

I hadn’t put two and two together and realized that the quote comes from Asbury Park Press editor, Randy Bergmann, my uncle.

25 Things About Me

After first being tagged by William (requesting only seven things) and subsequently by Sanjeev, Sorin, and Paul through Facebook, I have finally gotten round to compiling my own self-absorbed list. Here is the list that I published on Facebook: Continue reading
