Silent Lucidity

I am often told by Spaniards, experts on all things American, that Americans only eat hamburgers and pizza (they obviously never heard of Taco Bell). I think that makes me un-American because I eat maybe one or two hamburgers a year (and have never been to Taco Bell before), but last night was one of those hamburgers. For no reason whatsoever, I felt for a good burger. Because even a decent burger is hard to come by in Spain, I opted for the only mediocre burger joint in town — Hard Rock Cafe. Hard Rock was a mistake: while my stomach still hurts from the over-sized burger, my head still aches from the annoyingly loud music.

The music was so loud, in fact, that I could barely hold a conversation, let a lone enjoy the joyless pseudo-rock lovers ambiance. As you can imagine, the place was plagued with American and British ex-pats and tourists looking for an overlit, obnoxious drinking den populated by chubby-legged short skirt wearing waitresses and mid-level students of the English language waiters.

Then out of all of the noise, distortion, E.S.O.L., rosy beer-bellied Brits and obese “Oh, my God” Americans, arose “Silent Lucidity“, the only commercially successful song by Queensrÿche. Perhaps it was the fact that I had just gone to see the high school film Juno or that “Silent Lucidity” came out in 1990, my first year of college, that I got to reflecting. Continue reading

Grave Error to Endorse Obama?

oba5.jpg

Rumor has it that Grave Error will officially endorse Senator Barak Obama as its choice for the U.S. presidency.

In related news, it appears that Hillary is about to change her campaign strategy once again. First it was her 35 years of experience, 8 of which were as an elected official and transparent, the remaining years of alleged experience will be disclosed at a later time at the sole discretion of the candidate or when required to so by judicial order on appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. Hillary was the only candidate who would be ready for the White House on day one. She knew exactly who to fire at the White House travel agency and which funiture she’d finally be returning to its rightful place.

Then after losing in Iowa, Hillary changed her strategy to being the candidate for change and sometimes for almost crying. After winning in New Hampshire, Hillary again changed her strategy to be the housewife with the screaming, yelling, jealous and racist husband.

Now after South Carolina, it looks like Hillary is going to change once again. This time her husband is going to not talk to so much, and she is going to remind everyone of what Billl, I mean Hillary, stood for when he, I mean she, ran for office in 1992.

Give me a break! Can you believe there are people buying this stuff?

Weeds

I hate to admit it, but for the first time in decades, probably, the U.S. is producing TV that doesn’t bite, and I don’t like TV. This started with The Sopranos (which I have never seen), and then went onto other more cinemagraphic style TV shows such as 24 and Lost. As I have mentioned, I am a huge fan of The Wire, and I am now just finishing the first season of Weeds, about a single mother (recently widowed) who tries to support her two children by selling pot in the burbs.

The opening seen of the show portrays American suburbs as being places where everyone dresses and acts the same. It’s kind of funny because when you live abroad that’s exactly how you see the people in your new surroundings. But after watching the the opening seen of Weeds, I almost enjoyed watching the stereotypical Americans doing stereotypical American things like jogging and wearing kaki shorts and baseball caps. The fact of the matter is that in any society, anywhere in the world, people always move towards homogeneity. It’s a fact of life.

I suppose the point about Weeds is that even in the burbs, people need some weed to get by. (Interestingly enough, the adult male characters tend to be more empathetic and understanding towards the widowed protagonist than they adult female ones.) Now I have never been into agriculture, but watching the show almost makes me want to light a fire — if only to have a good excuse for not getting stuff done.

Too Much Home Entertainment

Wire.jpg

I have a case of too much home entertainment on my hands. One of the problems is that Christmas normally lasts from the day after Thanksgiving until December 25th. After that point, all Christmas music and decorations should be safely put away until the following November. But this is not the case in Spain where the Epiphany is celebrated as a central part of Christmas season.

As a matter of fact, children receive their gifts not from Santa Claus on December 25th, but rather from the three Wise Men (Reyes Magos, ironicially a misnomer since they are not kings nor magicians) on January 6th. This all means that after having said my good byes to Christmas two weeks ago, I returned to Spain to find that everyone was still out shopping and whistling expired caroles. Furthermore, as today is January 6th, everything is closed except for bakeries which sell the traditional and inedible Roscón de Reyes (a dry, uninteresting cake). As a result, I have spent today (and the entire weekend) locked up inside my apartment alternating between various Christmas gifts and my new reading list to entertain myself. Continue reading

Back from Brooklyn

What happen? I’m back from Brooklyn. I spent ten days back in the States, split about half and half between home and NYC, and now I am back. After almost two weeks of being offline, I almost feel as if I could never go back to work again in my life and not be a lesser person for it.

As usual, I didn’t get to do all of the things I would have liked to over Christmas, but I did get to spend some extra time with ReWrite in Brooklyn. This ain’t the best video ever shot, but it’s the only footage I got. It starts with the Potomac River near Great Falls on the Maryland side, then goes to photos from the Staton Island ferry, and then finally the view from ReWrite’s window in Brooklyn near Prospect Park (on the other side). The music is “One Step” by Aretha Franklin.

Offline and Loving It!

Harbor.JPG

For this Holiday Season, I am offline and absolutely loving it. I barely check my webmail or my work mail, and it’s great. Unfortunately, this won’t last too many more days. See ya’ll soon…
