Catching Up

podcasts-lopate.jpg

I spent the last seven days in Rabat, Morocco, and am now spending my Saturday trying to catch up on a week’s worth of podcasts. Although I don’t always think that Leonard Lopate asks the right questions, his show is definitely one of my favorites. Just take a look at the breadth of topics that I missed:

  • Globalization of the Financial Crisis
  • Child Soldiers in Burma
  • The Match Monopoly of the Great Depression
  • Cost of Global Warming
  • Daniel Barenboim Interview
  • Urban Exploration
  • The Ongoing Conspiracy to Christianize the Military
  • Accountability in the American System
  • The Brooklyn Food Conference
  • Jazz Improvisation

The WiFi Router that Killed WiFi Everywhere

la-fonera-2-0.jpg

Like the song, “Video Killed the Radio Star”, it looks like the WiFi router may kill the WiFi network. Let me explain.

First, congrats to Iurgi and the guys at FON (where I used work) for the new La Fonera 2.0, a WiFi router that also doubles as a remote downloader, allowing you to upload or download files independently of your computer. In other words, you can upload or download files to and from the Internet without slowing your computer down or even turning it on.

What does this have to do with FON, the WiFi sharing network? FON’s entire raison d’être is to give users free, ubiquitous WiFi access throughout the world. The idea was that users, by contracting for DSL at home, should also have access to the Internet whenever they are away from home. This was to be achieved by installing FON’s special WiFi router – the La Fonera – that permitted users to share their WiFi connection with other users, thus creating a ubiquitous, user-generated WiFi network. The problem was that the network wasn’t growing fast enough, and the existing network was unreliable (users turned off routers when not using them and there was a limited network to connect to).

As a solution to the problem, the La Fonera 2.0 was intended to jump-start the FON network by getting more people to (i) install a WiFi sharing router and (ii) keep that router online even when away from home. Here comes the irony: Continue reading

Eugene Robinson Wins Pulitzer

eugene-robinson.jpg

Eugene Robinson, who I consistently cited during my own annoyingly biased coverage of the 2008 Presidential Elections, has won the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for commentary. Congratulations to Mr. Robinson!

Just a Little Bit of Sun

louvre-rivoli.jpg

In Madrid, I have the great fortune of sunny days year round, making it an ideal city to live. Whenever I am in Paris it is almost always gray, rainy, windy, cold and depressing. But just a little bit of sun goes a long long way, turning the gloomy city into one of the most beautiful places in the world.

And it doesn’t have to be much, just enough to break through the clouds.

25 Things About Me

After first being tagged by William (requesting only seven things) and subsequently by Sanjeev, Sorin, and Paul through Facebook, I have finally gotten round to compiling my own self-absorbed list. Here is the list that I published on Facebook: Continue reading

Self Geo-Location on Google Maps

google-maps15.jpg

google-maps1.jpg

OK, I know I have better things to do than browse Google Maps, but that’s what I was doing. Sometimes I like to take little virtual walks down the street, and today I thought I would check out Boca Grande, Florida where I spent Christmas this year. I tried to use Google Maps’ street level view, but it wasn’t available for Boca Grande. That’s when I recalled that sometime this past year, I saw a Google Maps car adorned with multiple cameras drive right in front of my building in Madrid. So I went straight to my address on Google Maps and guess what I found?

That’s right! There I was, geo-located, standing in full view. Imagine if I were captured in some clandestine act . . . other than looking like the mailman. Unfortunately for my readers, my life is not that interesting.

Snow

snow.jpg

After ten days of 80F/27C weather in Boca Grande, Florida, I welcomed in 2009 by arriving in Paris at 25F/-4C. On Monday, when I was finally scheduled to fly back to Madrid, it snowed and the CDG airport was closed, thus delaying my return to quasi-reality until Wednesday. Then this morning I awoke to snow in Madrid. In my eight years in the Spanish capital, I have seen snow flurries. This was the first time the snow actually stuck.

As beautiful as the snow can be, I think I still prefer my December strolls on the beach.

Great T-Shirts

tshirts.jpg

Here are two great t-shirts. The first one is a t-shirt of Che Guevara wearing a Che Guevara t-shirt. My father was a sporting his all Christmas (my mom bought it at The Onion’s online store). The farce of Che-worship makes this t-shirt an instant classic.

The second is the NJ Turnpike t-shirt (which I proudly wore on Thanksgiving), available at select New Jersey Turnpike rest stops. For anyone familiar with the Turnpike, the humor inherent in the t-shirt warrants no further elaboration. For the rest of you, just consider yourselves lucky.
