Great Interview with Ejovi

I just visited Ejovi’s blog and found these videos from a 2005 PBS interview discussing his book Hacker Cracker. I don’t pretend to know Ejovi that well, but I did get to know him a little bit during the time he worked with us at FON and during a short stay in Madrid.

These two (of four) videos are particularly interesting as he discusses the American experience of growing up in Brooklyn (somewhat reminiscent of my family’s Bronx Tale), the very entrepreneurial nature of those who are bred in depressed American neigbhorhoods, and the importance of information technology. He even alludes to gentrification, a topic dear to my Bro’s heart. The final two videos are available as well on his blog. Check them out!

What would Bill Collins say about Terry Tate?

I wonder what the great Bill Collins, HR and OB guru, would have to say about Terry Tate, Office Linebacker and Sensitivity Training.

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could get Cobra to do the same at FON?

Temptation

I have been thinking about a friend of mine (let’s call him “Alfie”) who is going through a tough time because he is breaking up with his girlfriend after five years of dating (and for the past year maintaining a long distance relationship). And of course, it is his decision, so she is having an even harder time. I have been working very hard to have compassion for them both, but I suppose, I am just at an age where these matters do not seem as important as they once did when I was younger. Here are my feelings on the matter:

Another Failed Attempt

A friend and co-worker at FON, (who I will not name) is one of the nicest guys I know. He is also very mature and intelligent for his age, and has a position of considerable importance in the company. But, no matter how hard he tries, he just can’t quite seal the deal.

We have callled many emergency sessions to discuss strategic planning, and yet it is all to no avail. Even Tuesday night at FON’s One Year Anniversary Party where he appeared to have more options than anyone else on the guest list, he returned home empty-handed. My immediate diagnosis would be that he is an “enamoradizo” that distracts him from focusing. Consequenly, I dedicate this classic Beatles’ tune . . .

Rose Superstar Back in Town, Again!

Apartheid in American Cities and Suburbs

My bro has just published another article on the Safe Democracy website. This one is entitled “Is Urban Revitalization Tantamount to Redlining” and discusses how gentrification and urban revitalization projects in American cities are once again segrating cities for the sole benefit of the rich.

These videos are of the Cross Bronx Expressway that I made along with others in the Bronx.

Rose Superstar is Back in Town

Quality Living

Kitaj: If not not

In a recent email exchange with an old friend of mine from the past, I asked her to tell me a little bit about her life in Germany. A few years ago, she moved with her husband to Germany where they have since had two sons. Many times our cultural ethnocentrism causes us to believe that the quality of life in our country is greater than in others. I know that in the US, people tend to believe that this is so. And this is also very true for Spain, where I am constantly being told that I must live better in Spain than in the US (¿a qué se vive mejor en España?). My general belief is the majority of the world would prefer to stay put and not live away from their culture of birth. Even people who have emigrated due to extreme hardship in their home countries generally hope that one day the living (or political) conditions will improve so that they can return. And it is also very true that just because a country is poor or even politically oppressed (say as in Cuba or Morocco), many people prefer not to leave and can live happier lives than in wealthier nations.

In any event, I believe that looking into the ways in which people live their lives in other countries can teach us a lot about how to improve the quality of life in our own countries. For that reason, I am posting my friend’s description here:
