With a really rough schedule this year, three kids, plus interruptions in reading due to other distractions such as the Serial and Undisclosed podcasts, I had a very fruitful year, finishing 24 books. Here’s what I read:
- Grant by Ron Chernow (currently reading)
- Five-Carat Soul by James McBride
- Everything I Ever Told You by Celeste Neg
- In the Castle of My Skin by George Lamming
- We Were Eight Years in Power by Ta-Nehisi Coates
- A Legacy of Spies by John LeCarré
- A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles
- Behold the Dreamers by Imbolo Mbue
- Mrs. Fletcher by Tom Perrotta
- The Legend of Colton H. Bryant by Alexandra Fuller
- Men Without Women by Haruki Murakami
- The Islamic Jesus: How the King of the Jews Became a Prophet of the Muslims by Mustafa Akyol
- East West Street: On the Origins of “Genocide” and “Crimes Against Humanity” by Philippe Sands
- A Wild Sheep Chase by Haruki Murakami (re-read)
- Exit West by Moshin Hamid
- The Autobiography of Malcolm X by Malcolm X
- The Fishermen by Chigozie Obioma
- Thunder in the Mountains: Chief Joseph, Oliver Otis Howard and the Nez Perce War by Daniel J. Sharfstein
- Do Not Say We Have Nothing by Madeleine Thien
- Commonwealth by Ann Packet
- The Three-Body Problem by Cixin Liu
- Moonglow by Michael Chabon
- The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead
- The Captured: A True Story of Abduction by Indians on the Texas Frontier by Scott Zesch
- The Sellout by Paul Beatty
If I had to say there were two that I absolutely loved above the rest were The Sellout and Exit West. But Do Not Say We Have Nothing, Thunder in the Mountains, Men Without Women, The Legend of Colton H. Bryant, Mrs. Fletcher and Behold the Dreamers were all excellent, as was the short story “Five-Carat Soul” in the collection of the same name.
